If you're already familiar with the games listed below click on "Next Step" to see what other suggestions I have for you.
These are 3 games I would suggest to get you started, not listed in any particular order.
Settlers of Catan
This game came onto the scene in 1995, and has been increasing in popularity ever since. Settlers has a little bit of everything; you create the board with hexagon tiles so you never play on the same map twice, players try to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. On each turn dice are rolled to determine what resources the island produces. Players collect these resources to build up their civilizations to get to 10 victory points and win the game.
This game plays 2-4 players but can be expanded to 5-6 players. It plays in about 60-90 minutes. For more information on Settlers of Catan click here.
Ticket to Ride
Ticket to Ride is what hooked me to gaming and offers plenty of replay ability and fun.
from the publisher's website: "Ticket to Ride is a cross-country train adventure in which players collect and play matching train cards to claim railway routes connecting cities throughout North America. The longer the routes, the more points they earn.
Additional points come to those who can fulfill their Destination Tickets by connecting two distant cities, and to the player who builds the longest continuous railway."
If you're familiar with the original Ticket to Ride and want more train building excitement you can move to Ticket to Ride Europe this version adds some additional rules to the original version and you're playing throught Europe. Or you may be interested in Ticket to Ride Markiln which adds even more variations and plays on a map of Germany. Ticket to Ride plays 2-5 people and takes about 60-90 minutes. Carcassonne
This game will introduce you to the world of tile laying. Many designer board games contain this particular mechanic or style of play in their games.
From the publisher's website: "The players develop the area around Carcassonne and deploy their followers on the roads, in the cities, in the cloisters, and in the fields. The skill of the players to develop the area will determine who is victorious."
Carcassonne plays 2-4 people and can expand to play 5-6 (Inns and Cathedrals) and takes about 45-60 minutes and offers a wide range of expansions that compliment it. For more information on the Carcassonne series click here.
